Bellevue which means ‘beautiful view’ in French and Bellevue Hotel is a hotel with a beautiful view which is located on Haliburton’s Hill. It was once a bungalow of Thomas Haliburton who was the first sheriff of Penang. Bellevue Hotel is the only hotel on Penang Hill and it is also the only convalescent bungalow from the early stage of development on Penang Hill that has been well maintained and accessible to the public until today.

Today, the hotel consists of a restaurant that serves a variety of western and fusion food. At the restaurant, visitors are able to admire the ‘belle vue’ of George Town City while having a meal, hotpot or even a cup of coffee. The abandon Crag Hotel which was the first hotel on Penang Hill could be seen on top of Lomond Hill (on your left).

Bellevue Hotel have a very close relationship with the landmark of Georgetown too! You are also able to walk through the tales of two best friends who built the landmark of Georgetown when passing through the alley towards the restaurant and admire their creation - KOMTAR and the Dome (one of Bucky’s last world project) from the Bellevue Restaurant.

For nature lovers, Bellevue hotel offers attractions such as Ginger Garden & Aviary which is a private collection and also the research centre for Folia Malaysia magazine for more than 20 years. This is an award winning ginger garden, which contains variety of ginger from around the world. Besides the ginger garden, the garden also have a collection of rare and endangered Malaysian plants together with an aviary which is a private collection of native and exotic birds. The interactive mechanical dinosaurs also add a hint of excitement to the garden.

Walking around the Hotel is like walking through a time travel tunnel, where you are able to travel back to more than 160 years ago and see the bits and pieces of paintings of the old Penang during the 1800s drawn by British painters who stayed in Penang.

The hotel also provided Buggy Tour to take visitors around summit road where all the preserved old bungalows are located along the road. This buggy tour save visitors a 4km walk while visitors gained deeper and better understanding on Penang Hill.

The Story Of An English House That Has Grown Into A Group Of Meaningful Businesses

Chapter 1: Building the most spacious bungalow on the Hill
After Francis Light discover a great place with cool and pleasant climate for a retreat better known as Flagstaff Hill (currently known as Penang Hill), many colonies of the British Empire(East India Company) came along and built their own house on top of the Hill as well. The hilltop was popular because it also served as a strategic place to monitor the Straits of Malacca. Mr. William Halliburton (or Hallyburton) who was the first sheriff of Penang that time was one of them who came along to Penang Hill.

He found a small hill with a great view of Penang island and decided to built a spacious bungalow on top of that hill. He fell deeply in love with the view and was so certain that no changes of purpose of the land would be done that he erected a permanent stone building on that site. While other colonies of the British Empire would just built temporary ‘atap’ bungalow that time so that they are able to demolished the building if any change of purpose of the land is intended. After he has done building his bungalow, Mr. Hallyburton was so happy that he named it Belle Vue (which means beautiful view in French) to reflect the reason of why he choose the place to build his bungalow. Later on, people would refer the small hill as Halliburton’s Hill as Mr. Hallyburton was the one who develop the small hill.  


 
Chapeter 2: Transformation Of The Private Bungalow To A More Commercial Bungalow
Later, the East India Company took over the property and lease it out only to higher ranking officials of the company for convalescent purpose. It was until 3 years after independence day of Malaysia, in 1960, the property was turned into hotel and added a double storey frontage to the building with a new name ‘Penang Hill Hotel’. Since then, it was the only hotel on Penang Hill since the closure of Crag Hotel in 1954.


 
Chapter 3: Adding In More Valuable Intellectual Values To The Hotel Business
Subsequently, it was bought over by a prominent figure in Penang who was able to re-develop the area in an eco-friendly way. The building was further refurbished to the original state of the property and at the same time, the new management has also added in a lot of paintings that recorded the bits and pieces of the development in Penang Island.

Life story of the new owner which includes his close friendship with his well respected friends, their intellectual and design were also added into the hotel. A veranda was later added at the back of the bungalow that serves as part of the external building of the restaurant.


Chapter 4: Lighten The Professional Research Centre To An Interactive Garden
Soon after, the owner included an aviary because he wanted to make something more and unique that can match up the architectural while having a place for his collection and doing his research, conservation and studies on plants for his quarterly Folia Malaysia magazine.

It started with the aviary, where the owner kept all his private collection of native and exotic birds where some were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Later, the owner added his private botanic collection which include rare endangered Malaysian plants and an impressive collection of 8 families of ginger  from around the world. His ginger garden also won a gold medal years later. Slowly, his botanical collection & aviary gain popularity and recognition among plant lovers.

One dark and windy night, a thief broke into the garden and stole most of the collection from the Aviary. It was a real heartache as 20 over years of collection was all gone in one night. The management managed to fill the aviary with other local species of birds later on.

In 2017, interactive dinosaurs were added in the garden to add a hint of excitement. The Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and others which are able to move and even roar.



Chapter 5: Utilizing The Hidden Talent Hired
To utilize the front compound and add in a relaxing Malaysian ambience, the management of Bellevue built 2 atap huts invited some young bloods to start a cafe in one of the hut and requested one of the hidden talent they hired years ago, Mr.Tang who won the first price in 2011 Penang Cha Kuay Tiao competition to start a cha kuay tiao stall in one of the hut.
